Partners mobilized for the international conference in Brazzaville

The technical committee for the organization of the first edition of the International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation (Ciar1) met on April 25 to take stock of the participation of development partners and the details of the preparation. Scheduled for July 2 to 5 in Brazzaville, the meeting aims to increase the global forest area on the basis of international cooperation, through afforestation and reforestation activities.
A few months after the summit of the three forest basins that the Congo hosted at the end of October 2023, the Congolese authorities consider Ciar1 to be the most important global meeting dedicated to afforestation and reforestation. The future international conference should bring together political decision-makers from around the world, diplomats, researchers, financiers, environmental defenders, non-governmental organizations, industrialists, indigenous communities, etc.

Less than three months before these meetings, the participation of technical and financial partners is becoming clearer. Assuring the presidency of the organizing committee of the Ciar 2024, the Minister of Forestry Economy, Rosalie Matondo, received confirmation from UN agencies such as the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations for food and agriculture, including the United Nations Forum on Forests, the African Union (AU), the African Development Bank, the World Bank, the European Union, the Cafi initiative.

The contribution of these partners will range from financial support to technical assistance through the moderation of thematic sessions; seventeen of the thirty-four expected presenters having already been confirmed. “AU experts provide us with input during weekly meetings. They participate through the amendments to the terms of reference of the Ciar, which means that we are very well advanced now. There remains the communication part which should begin shortly and also the sending of invitations to countries and international organizations,” explained Rosalie Matondo.
In terms of mobilizing internal resources, the organizing committee was reassuring about the commitment of the highest authorities. The Brazzaville conference is a complementary initiative to the United Nations decade on the restoration of degraded ecosystems. “The President of the Republic has instructed us to gather the means for the success of this conference. The Ministry of Finance will do what is necessary to make the conference a success,” added the president of the organizing committee.
Ciar1 intends to promote forestry and agroforestry plantations with the aim of increasing carbon stocks at the national level. This involves increasing the capacity for sequestration of atmospheric carbon as part of the fight against climate change, preserving habitats and biodiversity as well as
